Mental health treatment is driven by research that informs therapeutic approaches and treatment modalities. Research has identified that mental health providers are overconfident in their abilities to provide services to Veterans and lack cultural competence. One of the most impactful elements to providing effective therapy with Veterans is the specific cultural context. Due to a lack of context, Veterans are negatively impacted by assessments and mental health treatments that are not designed for Veterans. Current researchers and mental health providers do not understand that Veterans have a unique culture and lived experiences that need to be taken into account. The lack of culturally informed research drives the poor outcomes of mental health therapy for Veterans and their family members
Many Veteran based nonprofits have an amazing mission and support a variety of needs. Funding to support missions such as service animals, homes for veterans, and outdoor activities is extremely important however requires thousands of dollars in funding to be raised and serves to support often one individual or family. Funding research has a strong impact on not just the Veteran culture but anyone struggling with trauma. Research projects vary yet for every $10 - $100 a research program can be supported that not only impact 18 million Veterans currently in the United States but will have a positive impact on the billions in the US suffering from trauma and others across the globe.
